HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise: Exploring a flexible infrastructure resource pool

Enterprises today face a complex data landscape due to the rise of edge technologies. They deal with data that originates from and is processed in either in data centers, at the edge, or a combination of both. As more data is produced at the edge, the importance of local processing grows. This, combined with the challenges of private cloud scalability and costs, means organizations need to adopt more streamlined and efficient approaches. HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise (GLPCE) offers a solution. GLPCE blends the strengths of public and private clouds together. While it offers the flexibility and scalability demonstrated by public clouds, it also retains the advantages of private cloud implementations, such as data locality, dedicated infrastructure, and the capacity to integrate with and capitalize on pre-existing on-premises IT infrastructure investments. By using standardized instance types, GLPCE ensures that organizations maintain agility without compromising on cost-effectiveness.

HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise (GLPCE) offers a robust solution with its ability to flexibly allocate resources, prevent bottlenecks, and ensure cost-aware scalability. A standard GLPCE setup may include a single or multi rack configuration with various nodes, such as 4 from the bare metal pool with a mix of general purpose and memory optimized instance types, 8 dedicated to a Virtual Machines pool, and 4 for container tasks, emphasizing its versatile deployment capabilities.

HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise (GLPCE) provides a variety of instance types, such as:

  • General purpose: a good balance of compute, memory, and networking resources, and suitable for a wide variety of workloads. 
  • Compute optimized: designed for workloads that require high CPU performance, such as web servers, CI/CD pipelines, and container and VM orchestration. 
  • Memory optimized: designed for workloads that require high memory performance, such as in-memory databases and analytics. 
  • Storage optimized: designed for workloads that require high storage performance, such as data lakes and Splunk. 

In this first blog post, I will delve into the challenges organizations face in the current digital landscape. While private clouds offer notable advantages like geo-locality and enhanced performance, they also come with the added complexity of managing scalability, costs, and agility. Addressing this, HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise (GLPCE) emerges as a solution that blends the flexibility of public clouds with the specific controls of private ones, ensuring an infrastructure that's both agile and cost-efficient. A standout aspect of GLPCE is its flexible infrastructure resource pool, designed for immediate resource allocation, enabling organizations to swiftly adjust to varying digital traffic demands. Furthermore, as a managed solution, GLPCE alleviates the administrative burden, allowing businesses to focus on their core operations while enjoying the benefits of an efficient cloud infrastructure.

Navigating cloud computing complexities calls for a solution that's efficient and user-friendly. HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise (GLPCE) meets these needs, providing features designed to simplify and enhance cloud functionalities.

  • Flexible resource allocation: GLPCE enables targeted allocation and release of computing instance types from a dynamic infrastructure resource pool based on demand. 
  • Prevention of bottlenecks: GLPCE allows for adjusting resources for each service based on current needs, ensuring smooth operations, and preventing potential service interruptions or slowdowns. 
  • Cost-awareness: Through GLPCE's Consumption Analytics Service, administrators gain a clear insight into both private and public cloud costs, enabling a more streamlined approach to budgeting and cost management. 

Allocation / Deallocation 

HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise (GLPCE) supports resource allocation in line with expected workloads. Should a cluster harbor idle resources, they can be redirected to areas of higher demand. It offers consumption analytics and ongoing monitoring tools to ensure efficient resource utilization. I'll delve deeper into this concept with a forthcoming visual representation.

Resource allocation strategy

Initial allocation: As seen in screenshot 1, the initial resource allocation process is primarily based on anticipated workload demands. When preparing for extensive data-processing tasks, customers can allocate a higher number of memory-optimized (M2i) instance types to Cluster 2 within the virtualization resource pool. On the other hand, for every day, routine operations, Cluster 1 is typically outfitted with general purpose (G2i) instance types to ensure smooth and efficient operations. This allocation strategy aims to match resource types with the specific requirements of each cluster.

Reallocation: As illustrated in screenshot 2, there are times when instances within the bare metal resource pool remain unused. These idle resources are not merely dormant; they hold value. As shown in screenshot 2, these instance types can be quickly reallocated to any virtualization clusters based on their current needs. Such dynamic reallocation ensures optimal resource utilization, adapting promptly to varying workload demands.

Tune resource allocations 

Monitoring for efficiency/capacity: Using HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise, you can continuously monitor the utilization rates across all three services: bare metal, virtual machines, and containers. Responsive adjustments: Referring to screenshot 3, observe that if Cluster 2 possesses idle memory optimized (M2i) instances, they can be shifted from Cluster 2 either to the bare metal pool or to Cluster 1, depending on demand. Conversely, if Cluster 1 has surplus general purpose (G2i) units, they can be relocated in a similar manner. Such adaptability ensures that resource utilization is consistently maximized, preventing them from sitting unused when they could be beneficial elsewhere.

Capacity planning & monitoring 

Here’s how you can plan and monitor capacity usage in HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise (GLPCE) across the three services:

In Screenshot 4, the Capacity tab displays bare metal resources categorized by "Compute Group, Site, and Instance Type." Users can set thresholds for CPU and memory usage. Yellow bars in the CPU and memory columns signify that resource usage is nearing the configured maximum threshold.

In Screenshot 5, the Capacity tab categorizes Virtual Machine service resources by "Cluster and Instance Type." The screen displays four key metrics: CPU usage, CPU allocated, memory usage, and memory allocated.

  • CPU and memory usage thresholds reflect active resource consumption by hosted apps/processes. By defining a range, we can optimize resources, preventing underuse or potential performance issues. 
  • CPU and memory allocated thresholds show reserved resources per cluster/instance type, regardless of activity. This ensures we identify over-allocated or under-allocated resources.

In Screenshot 6, the Capacity tab displays grouping of Container resources by "Cluster, Instance Type, and Site." GLPCE supports two container deployment models: on Virtual Machines and on bare metal. While allocated thresholds are predetermined, this interface allows for the customization of usage thresholds.
